Welcome to Student Employment at Cornell

PLAN TO WORK AT CORNELL? READ THIS NOW!

BEFORE YOU WORK

If you plan to work at Cornell (and most students do work at some point) there is one critical requirement...you must be able to prove your identity and your eligibility to work in the United States and complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form.

This is a federal law.

The I-9 must be completed before you start working

The process is fairly simple.

  • You present original documentation (proving both your identity and employability) to an approved representative of the university - usually your supervisor.
  • If your documentation is acceptable, you complete one section of the I-9 Form, and the Cornell staff member verifies/notes your documentation and signs the form.

You can complete the I-9 on your first day of work.

  • Bring your original documentation to the Student Employment table at Bartels Hall on August 19, 2005.
  • Student Employment staff will review your documenation and sign-off on the required I-9 form.
  • Upon completion of Form I-9 you will receive an I-9 Confirmation card to show potential employers.
  • The I-9 Confirmation card allows you to start working as soon as you find a job...you do not have to complete another I-9 form.
  • Once you have an I-9 Form on file with Student Employment, you should not have to complete another form during your tenure at Cornell; unless you're hired as a Resident Advisor, Graduate Assistant, or into specific hourly athletic jobs.

Documentation that proves identity and employment eligibility typically consist of EITHER a U.S. Passport (unexpired or expired), OR a driver's license or student ID card AND a social security card or birth certificate. See the full list of accepted documents if you do not have these documents available.

PLEASE NOTE: Only original documentation is allowed. Copies of documents cannot be accepted.

FINDING A JOB

Cornell does not place students in jobs. Students conduct their own job search to identify opportunities that best fit their interests, skills, and class schedules.

Jobs at Cornell and in Tompkins County (for the academic year and summer) are listed through uPortal and on Bear Access / Student Services / Student Jobs & Internships.

Jobs and internships outside of Cornell/Tompkins County are advertised through Career Services on CornellTRAK.

You can access the job postings with a valid Cornell NetID.

Most Academic Year jobs will be advertised starting August, 2007.
